    Induction Season

As we approach Induction time and school is in full swing this Spring, I thought I might spend some time discussing how to engage our students and new inductees in STTI early on. We often hear new members say they have heard very little about STTI until Induction time is near. I can attest that most chapters do try to engage students and nurse leaders early on and do spend time discussing the role of STTI in a nursing career. Over the past few months, I have heard chapter leaders and other members talk about how to retain members especially the new inductees, so I thought we might begin by discussing some strategies for early engagement.

Several chapters in Region 6 often hold an Induction Luncheon or Tea a few weeks prior to the official Induction Ceremony. There the chapter leaders often show a power point presentation and also a view of the STTI website during the luncheon. The STTI website is explained and explored with the new inductees including the Virginia Henderson e-repository. Some chapter leaders state that it is important to encourage the new inductees to sign up to participate in various chapter committees prior to leaving the luncheon. Others also put together a goody bag with information about upcoming chapter, regional and national STTI events and a list of chapter contacts.

If your University has a Student Nurses Association then even more opportunities arise. You could coordinate service activities and/or sponsor one of their meetings and share with them all that is there for them on the Website without even being a member. Ask the SNA to add a monthly Chapter update to each of their agendas.

Again if you have further thoughts or ideas please do not hesitate to contact me atkyzart@nsula.edu. Even better, you can begin a discussion on the Region 6 Officer Connect to share ideas that have been successful with your chapter. Let's work together to increase chapter member involvement. Thanks for all that you do!!

    Fall 2012 Iota Nu Newsletter

Fall is almost in the air and I want to share some of the great things going on with our Iota Nu Chapter!

You may ask, “What has Iota Nu done for you?”

    Well, several things!

    1. We now have a chapter website!  http://thecircle.nursingsociety.org/IotaNuChapter/Home/

If you’re like me, you “google” a lot! So just google “Sigma theta tau iota nu website” and it will get you there too!  And we have photos of our chapter at the Alzheimer’s Walk September 2012 under “Events” Stay tuned for more photos in that area!

You’ll see our immediate past president, Karen Koerber-Timmons, accepting our key chapter award at the Biennium November 2011, Chapter news to the right has the current events posted. There is an easy “Renew today” button too.

    1. Iota Nu Research Grants

Iota Nu Chapter is offering its members 2 research awards at $500 each semester (total of $2000). This is an increase from past years!

    1. Our chapter’s 25th anniversary celebration will be April 19, 2013, and we need volunteers to serve on a task force!  We will have a meeting this fall and begin to plan this event honoring our history. Don’t miss it!

    1. Our Fall induction will be November 15 in the Graduate Nursing Building. Updates for times will be posted on Chapter News on the website.

    1. Exciting projects in the planning stages: A) Poster competition online with a cash prize including research and practice topics.  Stay tuned for guidelines! B) Mentor program: committee members Vicki Jowell and Christine Gipson C) Working on establishing a Facebook page.

    1. Lastly, I and two board members ( Katheryn Courville, and Connie Wyszynski) were able to attend the Leadership Forum in Indianapolis in September. See below picture our group and new friends at lunch. Several take away points: STTI is unique; we are blended between being an honor society and a professional organization.  It is an honor and a responsibility to be a part of the organization. And it is an honor to be your president,
